The original name of the village, Kleparo[2][verification needed][kleˈpaɾo] in the 18th century, lost the syllable-initial consonant cluster "kl-", simplified into "q-" [ceˈpaɾo], a common development of Middle Albanian at the time.[citation needed] According to 19th century topographer William Martin Leake, the original name of the village was Kiepero or Kiparos, which derives from the Greek word kipos, meaning garden.[3]
