According to secret documents released by Wikileaks, the US has been trying to prevent Iran from signing an agreement of cooperation with Albania.
On Monday the Albanian newspaper Shekulli reported that Washington has ordered its embassy in the Albania's Capital of Tirana to “strongly urge the Albanian government to reject the proposals of the Iranian government to sign the agreement of free trade and cultural exchange.”
In a letter to the US Ambassador to Albania, Assistant Secretary of State Stuart Jones explicitly ordered John Withers that “the Albanian government should not accept the aforementioned agreements.”
Albania's Deputy Foreign Minister Edit Harxhi has confirmed that Tehran's Ambassador to Tirana Ali Amouei has handed Iran's proposal for cooperation to the Albanian Foreign Minister Ilir Meta in 2009, the Shekulli reported.
The Wikileaks website has been releasing classified US documents since 2010, some of which touch on issues ranging from US involvement in spying against the UN to the involvement of Washington's embassies across the world in an espionage network.
